Volunteers renovate Forest Creek outdoor classroom

Forest Creek Elementary now has a complete first phase of its outdoor learning classroom, which students will use to conduct science experiments while engaging in the environment.

The classroom was transformed from a field by 12 volunteers from Hired Texas Job Club September 26 as part of the United Way Day of Caring. The group pulled weeds, cleared debris, installed a walkway to the classroom and built a seating area.

“The kids are so thrilled. They’ve been tiptoeing around the path the get to the classroom,” said second grade teacher Cindy Loftis. “I think its going to be used really quickly.”

The project was funded by the Forest Creek Elementary PTA and includes community designed items, like stepping stones from art teacher, Pam Arnold, the FCE Service Club and Green Paw Garden Club.

Hired Texas Job Club board member Steve Wuest has strong ties to Forest Creek Elementary as a parent. He seized the opportunity to help the school through the community organization.

This was the second year the Hired Texas Job Club has participated in the United Way Day of Caring event at Forest Creek. Wuest said outdoor classrooms are an important part of education in the digital age.

“You have to experience the environment first hand,” he said. “There’s a lot you can see in a picture and read in books, but you need to actually be in the outdoors seeing the birds and animals or the vegetation out there.”

The Forest Creek community has high hopes of adding to the outdoor classroom during future volunteer events. Loftis said students are proven to be more attentive and engaged when classes are active.

“We are going to put an outdoor camera out there to start identifying animals that live in the area and we’ve already left an area that is no longer mowed to see how it changes over the seasons,” Loftis said. “We’re trying to move science outside the building.”[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][ultimate_spacer height=”30″][dt_fancy_title title=”Pictures” title_align=”left” title_size=”h3″ title_color=”default” title_bg=”disabled” separator_color=”default”][ultimate_spacer height=”30″][crabgridsocials name=”Forest Creek Outdoor Learning” social=”smugmug” smugdatatype=”gallery” smuggallery=”44870774_Px7PLs” smugusername=”corey_ryan@roundrockisd.org” pxfeature=”upcoming” pxsort=”created at” nbrimg=”3″ datalayout=”23″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
