Westwood Salutatorian to attend University of Texas at Austin, study chemical engineering

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Westwood High School Salutatorian Manjula Andukrui has a mission to combine her academic skills with a passion for serving others as she continues her education at the University of Texas at Austin studying chemical engineering.

Through her chosen field of study, Andukrui said she has the opportunity to find the best way to give back to those in need, whether it’s finding new ways to deliver medicine or making new medicine.

“Chemical engineering provides a lot of opportunities to innovate while giving back to the community” Andukrui said. “I like math and chemistry and with chemical engineering, you can do anything from energy science, to materials to medicine.”

Along with Westwood, Andukrui attended Pond Springs Elementary School and Grisham Middle School during her time at Round Rock ISD. Andukrui was a member of the Westwood Sundancers, National Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and served as DECA president. She also founded the Serving Our Society organization, which helped students serve the community while also maintaining a demanding school and extracurricular schedule.

“Sundancers gave me a diverse group and allowed me to make lifelong friends,” Andukrui said. “I’m also really glad I was in DECA because it made me more confident in myself and I had the opportunity to travel for our national competitions.”

With a passion for learning, Andukrui said her most influential teacher while at Westwood has been Westwood economics teacher Bill Blaine, whose zeal and excitement for the class inspired Andukrui and her classmates to be true learners.

“Manjula is a standout student and her intellectual gifts, coupled with an impressive work ethic stands out amongst Westwood’s amazing student body,” Blaine said. “Her soft skills are as impressive as her academic talents.  She was a pleasure to teach, and I have no doubt she will encounter innumerable successes in life.  It is my opinion that Manjula possesses the ethics and character we are looking for in our young leaders.”[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/LdIpnq3rQ6Y?list=PLE8IqSthAqE5i1QOYi62M3_kFU-NOM2FY”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
