Kinder and 3rd Grade Collaborate To Graph Leaves

Mrs. Pelzel’s kindergarten students and Ms. Eskridge’s students at Blackland Prairie collaborated on creating a fall picture in Google Drawing and then graphing the number of leaves they had in Google Sheets. Mrs. Rollans loved watching as the third graders guided their kindergarten partner through the activity. The older students showed the younger ones how to drag and drop, fill in cells in Sheets with color to create bar graphs, and write a number sentence about the leaves. The conversations were authentic discussions about how the tree should look and the math concepts of one to one correspondence, without either student realizing they were discussing math. We loved seeing how technology could facilitate math skills and interpersonal ones at the same time.
