Before the puck dropped at the Texas Stars Hockey Game held at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, the Live Oak Elementary School student choir sang and signed the National Anthem to a sold out crowd of hockey fans.
“I’m so proud of my students. They worked so hard to sound and sign as one voice,” said Becky Knox, Live Oak music specialist. “This was undoubtedly one of their best performances.”
The 55 fourth and fifth-grade choir students, including several who performed using American Sign Language, rehearsed weekly for their game day performance. Deaf education students who participate in the District’s Capital Area Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD), operated out of Live Oak, are completely integrated into the classroom and all other school day activities.
“It was such a thrill to experience the crowd’s response to our choir,” Live Oak Principal Katie Holding said. “The applause was so loud and to see the students’ smiles when they came bounding back up the stairs was the best part of it for me.”
