Round Rock ISD Fine Arts is proud to announce an exciting mix of both traditional and contemporary musical theatre shows* coming to a stage near you in 2020. The students and staff at 10 area schools will be pulling out all the stops to produce energizing productions with student breakout moments.

The Lion King

The Lion King, Jr. is a story of the adventures of a young lion cub, Simba, as he matures, comes of age and accepts his destiny.

In this journey, the young lion meets a variety of mentors and teachers who help him claim his rightful place as the king of the pridelands. With music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice, The Lion King, Jr. includes all the classic songs from the 1994 animated film such as “Hakuna Matata” and the Academy Award winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Publisher rating: G.

Seussical the Musical

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos.

Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Featuring favorite ABBA songs and set in Greece, Mamma Mia! tells the story of Donna as she prepares for the wedding of her daughter, Sophie. The fun starts when Donna’s best friends reunite for the wedding. Unbeknownst to Donna, however, Sophie has also invited Donna’s old flames in an attempt to discover her father’s identity! Happy chaos, rediscovered love, and a few minor inconveniences all lead to a celebration only ABBA can inspire. Publisher rating: PG-13.

Chicago: High School Edition – TWO LOCATIONS

In the razzle-dazzle of the roaring 1920s, Chicago is a story of Roxy Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap…until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune, and acquittal. Legally Blonde is an upbeat musical comedy based on the adored 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances – this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal!

Elle Woods is determined to win her boyfriend back, and charms her way into the prestigious Harvard law school. While there, Elle struggles to fit in. The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical.

When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical.

It’s a “big bright beautiful world” as everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family. Publisher rating: G.
