First Day of School for All Students – August 20

We are so excited to welcome your student back to school (virtually) this week! Please make sure your student engages during the day. This can be done by:

  • your student engaging with their teacher through a virtual meeting, email or phone OR
  • your student logging into Schoology and completing/engaging in an activity or submitting an assignment.

Important Attendance Information 

  • A student MUST complete the daily attendance requirements described above by 11:59 p.m. in order to be counted present for the day. 
    • For example, if a student is absent from in person learning and does not submit any assignments on 8/26 and completes an activity in Schoology the following morning, 8/27, at 5:00 a.m., it does NOT count toward the previous day’s attendance requirement even though it was completed prior to the recapture deadline.
    • The assignment date or due date do not have an impact on attendance, only the date that an assignment is actually submitted.
  • A student who completes several days worth of assignments on one day can only use those assignments as evidence of activity on the date they are submitted. The student must meet at least one of the daily requirements described above by 11:59 p.m. that day in order to be counted as present.

Round Rock ISD continues to monitor the spread of COVID-19 and receives regular updates and guidance from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Education Agency, and additional local, state and federal agencies regarding response, prevention and mitigation efforts. During this time, we remain dedicated to developing and implementing educational plans that aligns with the best interests and ensure the safety of our students and staff while remaining adaptable and flexible to the ever-changing impact of COVID-19 in our community, region and state.

Considering the public health conditions in our region, Round Rock ISD will offer 100 percent virtual learning to all students for the first three weeks of school. 

Following the initial three-weeks of all-virtual learning, Round Rock ISD will begin welcoming students back for on-campus learning, initially for students who are served primarily in self-contained special education settings — about 1 percent of students — on September 10. On September 15, District administrators plan to allow students who have selected on-campus learning as their preference to return to their schools.

The District will continue to monitor conditions and collaborate with health authorities and enforce safety standards and is also committed to moving back to an all virtual environment if circumstances warrant.

Parents may continue to keep their students in virtual learning for as long as they choose. They can also move from on-campus learning to virtual learning at any time. Those wishing to move from virtual to on-campus may do so at the end of the nine-week grading period. 

The Instructional Choice Percentages document, which will be updated as new data is available, includes a campus-by-campus breakdown of the percentage of students who plan to return for on-campus instruction, providing parents with critical information to make their choice.

Will we return to traditional on-campus learning this school year or will it all be virtual learning? 

Following the initial three-weeks of all-virtual learning, Round Rock ISD will begin welcoming students back for on-campus learning, initially for students who are served primarily in self-contained special education settings — about 1 percent of students — on September 10. On September 15, District administrators plan to allow students who have selected on-campus learning as their preference to return to their schools.

When and how can I change my child’s learning environment preference? 

At the end of every grading period, students/parents/guardians will have the opportunity to notify their campus if they wish to move from virtual to on-campus learning or on-campus to virtual learning. If circumstances warrant, a student may move from on-campus to virtual learning at any time.

 If we checked one out last year and no longer need it, how can we return it?

District-issued devices that are no longer needed can be returned to the Round Rock ISD Technology Center located at 7700 Cornerwood Dr. in Austin, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

What do I do if my student does not have access to a device and/or the internet? 

Families are asked to contact their campus administration. 

What do I do if my student is experiencing technical difficulties with their District-issued device or internet hotspot? 

Families should contact the technology help desk at 512-464-5167.

What do I do if my Home Access Center (HAC) username and password isn’t working? 

The username to access HAC accounts is now the 6-digit student ID. Passwords were not changed. New student 6-digit ID (s######) and campus password sign- in information can be found in the email confirming your student(s) registration. If you do not remember your password, you can complete the Student Password Reset Form or call (512) 464-5167, Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A representative from our Technology Help

On-Campus Learning

What are the sanitization protocols for campuses and facilities?

What social distancing measures will be taken? 

Campuses are developing entry and exit procedures that reduce large group gatherings. Outside areas will be marked to assist families/students waiting outdoors to maintain social distancing. Entries will be monitored to ensure students are entering the building one by one while maintaining the proper social distance. Once allowed into the building, students will move directly to class. If picking up breakfast, students will go to the cafeteria and must then continue to the classroom to eat.

During the school day, students and staff will be encouraged to maintain six feet of social distance at all times. Posters and floor markings will promote social distancing, designate entry, and exit doors, and identify one-way traffic patterns in classrooms, common areas and walkways. The number of students attending in-person classes will determine class size. Desks and tables will be socially distanced as much as possible. If utilizing tables, plexiglass will be used to divide student spaces.

When students are dismissed at the end of the school day, they will be expected to immediately leave campus.

Will students, staff and visitors be required to wear face coverings? 

All staff and visitors will wear face coverings at all times. Students will wear face coverings as outlined in the Reimagining Education Plan. Face coverings include non-medical grade disposable face masks and cloth face coverings (over the nose and mouth).

How will you help students who struggle with wearing face coverings, especially those with special needs? How will you manage students that need physical touch for reinforcement?

Teachers will help students build this skill like any other skill we want them to learn: they will provide direct instruction, modeling, practice, and positive reinforcement. Students with special needs might wear a face covering for a short amount of time as the teacher works with them to increase the student’s face covering tolerance for more extended periods. We will also look at various forms of face coverings as a different style might be more comfortable for the student to wear. Students will be taught social greetings and reinforcers other than hugs or high fives, such as waves, stickers, stamps, elbow bumps, etc.

What are the protocols if a staff member or student shows symptoms of COVID-19?

If my student experiences symptoms of COVID-19, will they be able to immediately transition to virtual learning for the time they are required to remain at home? 

If circumstances warrant, a student may move from in-person to virtual learning at any time.

What if a student or staff member comes in close contact with someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19?

What will instruction during on-campus learning look like? 

On-campus learning will look much the same as in normal conditions at the elementary school level, as elementary classes are generally self-contained with little movement around campus. Students will wear masks, and social distancing will be practiced within the classroom. Teachers will be providing in-person instruction, but students will also continue to use Schoology, the learning management system that is serving as our platform for virtual learning. 

Middle and high schools present a more significant challenge because traditionally, students transition several times a day, making their way through crowded hallways and interacting with hundreds or perhaps thousands of fellow students. With that and current public health conditions in consideration, the initial approach for on-campus learning at the secondary level represents the most conservative, cautious approach. Still, it allows for flexibility by campus and for progressing to more typical conditions, with students transitioning throughout the day, as circumstances improve.

Campus administrators are hard at work, creating cohorts of students who will do the bulk of their work in one classroom during the school day. Each cohort will be assigned a teacher/mentor to guide them and help familiarize students with new campus procedures and how virtual classrooms will work. Students will still transition to a limited number of classes such as Fine Arts, Athletics, or Career Technical Education (CTE) classes when it is safe to do so. Breaks will be built into the day where cohort teachers focus on social-emotional learning, and when students will have the opportunity for outside activities when appropriate.

This approach aligns with the latest recommendations from the CDC and allows students to build friendships within their cohorts and rely on their teacher/mentor for individualized support. Students will also benefit from targeted support and intervention from their subject area teachers. As is the case with elementary, it also allows for a seamless transition to virtual.

As conditions improve and students are permitted to move more freely throughout the building, will they move from class to class? If so, will the teacher be teaching in the virtual method and the student still on their device?

When students move from class to class it will be for face-to-face instruction, though some learning activities may be on a device. Classroom activities on a device is not a departure from our traditional approach.

How many students will be in each classroom?

The number of students in a classroom will vary at each campus and depends on several factors including the size of the total student population, the number of students returning on-campus, and the square footage of the classroom.

What time do virtual and on-campus classes start each day?

Virtual learning and on-campus learning are set to begin at: 

Elementary – 7:40 am – 2:55 pm
Middle School – 8:20 am to 3:35 pm
High School – 9:05 am to 4:20 pm

For families who choose virtual learning, parents have the opportunity to flex asynchronous learning times.

Once on-campus learning resumes, virtual and on-campus times may be staggered based on transportation for on-campus learners and on students safely entering and exiting schools.

What are the attendance requirements for On-Campus Learning? 

Daily attendance is critical to students’ academic progress. Regardless of which instructional model families choose, the minimum attendance for class credit rule under Texas Education Code, §25.092 remains in effect. Students are required to attend at least 90 percent of their classes to receive credit and be promoted.

How will grades be assessed? 

Students will be assessed on their mastery of the TEKS standards, regardless of whether they are learning on-campus or virtually.

What is being done to ensure fairness between on-campus and virtual learning students? 

We are currently developing systems that may utilize a variety of resources including online proctoring and on-campus testing centers for certain assessments. These plans are still under development and will be shared in more detail as we get closer to the start of the school year. 

On the occasion that schools would need to close, how would instruction continue? 

To accommodate virtual learning and prepare for the possibility of school closures, Round Rock ISD has adopted the Schoology Learning Management System® to allow for seamless continuation of learning in any environment. Will visitors be allowed? 

To minimize the risk of exposure, on-campus visitors will be limited to those essential to school operations, such as:

  • Guest Educators
  • Student Teachers, Interns, Observers
  • Contractors
  • Emergency personnel
  • Brinks Security
  • Food Service Vendors/Delivers
  • Mail Delivery (front office only)
  • Those deemed essential by Campus Administration

Visitors must wear a face covering and use the video intercom system at the front of the campus to communicate. Visitors should be prepared to show ID and will be asked to respond to a series of health screening questions before entering. If the visitor answers the screening questions appropriately and the campus is allowing the visitor to enter the reception area, the visitor must agree to a temperature check before interacting with staff. The front office personnel will take the temperature using a digital thermometer, and not allow access to the building, if the temperature is 100 degrees or greater.

What if I need to pick up my child during the school day? 

Parents and guardians who come to campus to pick up a student are limited to either remaining outside and utilizing the video intercom system or if this option is not available, may come into the front office area to sign out their child.  

Parents and guardians must wear a face covering while in the front office and be prepared to show ID.  

What If I need to drop off medication during the school day? 

Parents and guardians who need to provide student medication should contact the school nurse and set up an appointment to deliver the medication to the school. If that is not possible, parents and guardians may use the video intercom system to enter the front office, and inform the front office staff. They will contact the nurse who will meet with parents/guardians in the front office.

Parents and guardians must wear a face covering while in the front office and be prepared to show ID.

If my child is hearing impaired, how will they be able to follow along during class if the teacher is wearing a face covering? 

When on-campus learning begins, your child’s teachers can be provided with a clear face shield.  

Will Physical Education (PE) be offered? What will it look like? Will students wear face coverings? 

Yes, lessons are being designed with safety protocols in mind to meet the needs of on-campus learners. Social distancing will be practiced. Students will wear face coverings during PE. When students participate in a moderate to vigorous physical activity, the covering may be taken off; upon completion, the student will put their covering on again.

How are the high school classes for the academies that require off-campus activities going to be handled? 

We are continuing to review guidance from the TEA and will make these decisions based on what is safest for our students and partners. Some partners are currently not allowing students into facilities, but we will monitor those situations and make determinations as they arise.  

How will cohorts be formed? Will students be expected to remain in their cohort for the remainder of the school year? 

Principals will design cohorts so that students with like schedules are grouped to the extent possible. For example, band students will most likely be grouped together. Students remaining in their cohort depend on public health conditions. In Phase 3, students will be able to start transitioning/rotating to different classes, so part of their day might be spent with their cohort, but they won’t be with their cohort exclusively. If conditions allow, we could return to a traditional schedule. Cohorts will be assigned to a specific room where the bulk of their learning will occur during Phase 2. (Phase 1 is all virtual at-home instruction.)

Virtual Learning

Will students be required to attend synchronous learning during the first three weeks of school?

We highly encourage students to attend the synchronous time as the first three weeks will be important to establishing community. However, we understand that the synchronous learning option may not be possible for all families and there will be an option for students to complete assignments at their own pace. In order for attendance to be counted, classwork will need to be completed by the end of the day, 11:59 pm.

What are the device requirements for virtual learning? 

For general instruction, a device with internet capability,  a camera and microphone  is needed. Examples of devices include laptops, Chromebooks and tablets.  If your child is enrolled in specialized courses, it is recommended that you reach out to their instructor to see if additional specifications are recommended

What will virtual learning look like? 

Students who participate in virtual learning will engage in curriculum  Monday through Friday and will experience the same curriculum facilitated by a certified, Round Rock ISD teacher as those who have selected on-campus learning. Each day, students will have periods of daily, live instruction with certified teachers, as well as periods of self-paced, independent learning.

Will web cameras be required to be on during synchronous learning? 

The use of a webcam during synchronous learning is encouraged as it helps with engagement but your child’s teacher will be able to let you know if it’s required for their classes.

Will my student be taught by a teacher at the school they are zoned to attend?

Students will be taught virtually by teachers from their home campus.

Will virtual learning students receive the same curriculum as those on-campus? 

Yes, students who participate in Virtual Learning will experience the same curriculum as students on-campus. 

Will the curriculum be covered in its entirety? 

The Aligned Round Rock Curriculum (ARRC) is our District’s foundation for teaching and learning. All Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards will be taught in entirety.

What will a typical day/week look like for virtual learning students?

What will virtual learning look like for Special Education students?

If a student transitions from the virtual to on-campus learning environment, will they be assigned to the same teacher and class?

Every effort will be made to keep the teacher consistent, but it will also depend on class sizes as students come back so it cannot be guaranteed.

If my child is hearing impaired, how will they be able to follow along during class if the teacher is wearing a face covering? 

There should be no need for face coverings for virtual instruction. When on-campus learning begins, your child’s teachers can be provided with a clear face shield.

Students are required to attend at least 90 percent of their classes to receive credit and be promoted. Remote attendance will count in the same manner as on-campus attendance in satisfying this requirement.

Will virtual learning students be able to participate in Fine Arts courses? 

Yes, students will receive virtual instruction both asynchronously and synchronously in their chosen Fine Arts course. 

Will Physical Education (PE) be offered to virtual learning students? 

Yes, lessons are being designed to meet the needs of both on-campus and virtual learners.

Will virtual learning students be offered meal service?

Will virtual learning students be able to access counseling resources?

Will virtual learning students be able to participate in mental and behavioral health services, such as therapy?

Will virtual learning students be able to participate in the District’s mentoring program? 

The Round Rock ISD Mentoring program will continue in virtual environments with mentors serving students of all grade levels through online meetings.

Will lessons be created by our child’s teacher?

Lessons will be created by the teacher and grade level team at each school. The District will provide training in virtual instruction best practices and lesson plan examples and instructional resources to support teachers, but planning for instruction will be the teachers’ responsibility.

What does a mentor teacher do? How are they different from a classroom teacher? 

The mentor teacher is a certified educator who teaches social-emotional learning lessons during the day and helps students as they navigate their virtual classes. They may also be one of the student’s subject matter teachers and at some points during the day may be teaching their own classes virtually. During those times, counselors or administrators will be available to provide support.

Does my student still need to have all of their vaccinations if we choose virtual learning?

The State of Texas is not relaxing the immunization requirements for virtual learners. The District will work with families who have children lacking required vaccinations while learning virtually. However, students who want to be on campus for any reason (i.e., instruction, extracurricular activities) will need to have all required vaccinations before they can return. What is ClassLink?

ClassLink is a single sign-on system that provides direct access to Schoology® and the online learning dashboard.

How does a student login to with a personal device? 

  1. Log into ClassLink
    Enter username: Use your student’s 6-digit ID number (s######)
    Enter password: Ask your student what password they use to login at school.
  2. Sign In to ClassLink to verify your student’s  password and see their online dashboard.

How do student(s) login from a District Chromebook? 

  1. Log into the Chromebook
    Username: s + 6 digit student ID number (s######)
    Password: same password credentials as computer login
  2. Open a browser window, if it doesn’t open automatically. Classlink will be your homepage.
  3. Use credentials from Step 1 to Sign In to ClassLink, verify your student’s  password and see their online dashboard.

How can I stay connected with my child’s academic progress and view their activity? 

A parent/guardian Schoology® account will keep you connected with your student(s) academic progress.

Health and Safety Protocols

What are the sanitization protocols for campuses and facilities?

Campuses, classrooms and other District facilities will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected each day. More information on sanitization protocols can be found on the Reimagining Education Plan.

Will daily health screenings for staff and students be required?  

Staff will be required to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms prior to reporting to work each day. Parents/guardians will be expected to screen their students for COVID-19 symptoms each day and to keep them home if they display symptoms or a fever of 100 degrees and greater. Teachers will monitor students and refer them to the nurse if symptoms are suspected to be present.

What are the protocols if a staff member or student shows symptoms of COVID-19? 

The school nurse will provide a clinical assessment to determine if a student or staff member needs to be sent home. Students who are ill will be separated from their peers in an isolation room and should be picked up within one hour from the time the campus contacts the student’s parent or guardian. Other students will be immediately removed from the classroom and taken to an alternate location on campus so that the classroom can be disinfected.

Staff members displaying COVID-19 symptoms will follow District protocols; including isolation from students and other staff members.

How will you determine if a student has COVID-19, allergies or another illness? 

District nurses will follow assessment guidelines based on the TEA Public Health Guidance and the CDC Considerations for Schools. Additional COVID-19 screening information can be found in the Reimagining Education Plan

What if a student or staff member has a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19? 

In the case of an individual who was diagnosed with COVID-19, the individual may return to school when all three of the following criteria are met:

  1. at least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications); 
  2. the individual has improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and 
  3. at least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

*Staff who test positive for COVID-19 are required to stay home until approved to return to work by the District. 

In the case of an individual who has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and who is not evaluated by a medical professional or tested for COVID-19, such individual is assumed to have COVID-19, and the individual may not return to the campus until the individual has completed the same three-step set of criteria listed above. 

If the individual has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and wants to return to school before completing the above stay at home period, the individual must either 

  • (a) obtain a medical professional’s note clearing the individual for return based on an alternative diagnosis or 
  • (b) obtain an acute infection test (at a physician’s office, approved testing location: https://tdem.texas.gov/covid-19/) that comes back negative for the virus that causes COVID-19.

What if a student or staff member comes in close contact with someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19? 

Students or staff who come into close contact with an individual who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 will be required to follow the same guidelines as students and staff who have a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19. More information can be found on the Reimagining Education Plan.

If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, will communication be sent? 

Consistent with school notification requirements for other communicable diseases, and consistent with legal confidentiality requirements, Round Rock ISD will notify all teachers, staff, and families of all students in a school if a lab-confirmed COVID-19 case is identified among students, teachers or staff who participate on any on campus activities.

Extracurricular Activities

Will summer extracurricular activities take place? 

All Round Rock ISD summer extracurricular and campus activities have been canceled. The cancellations follow the order issued on July 14 by Travis County, which states all public and private schools in the county are to delay on-campus instruction until at least Sept. 7.

Will extracurricular activities begin in the Fall? 

Following the order issued by Travis County, no extracurricular sports or activities are allowed until school systems reopen for on-campus instruction. At this time, Round Rock ISD is set to begin on-campus instruction on Sept 10, 2020

As circumstances regarding COVID-19 continue to evolve, Round Rock ISD will continue to follow guidance from state and local health authorities, the Texas Education Agency, and the University Interscholastic League (UIL) to determine the best course of action to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Will high school students compete in University Interscholastic League (UIL) Marching Band competitions this school year? 

Round Rock ISD’s five comprehensive high schools will not be competing in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Marching Band competitions this school year. The District’s decision was based on recommendations from the band directors, the Fine Arts Department and guidance from local health authorities. Round Rock ISD joins Leander ISD, Austin ISD, Pflugerville ISD, and Manor ISD, who have all chosen not to compete for student and staff health and safety concerns.

Will students who participate in virtual learning be able to participate in UIL extracurricular activities? 

Yes, virtual learning students will be able to participate in UIL activities, which includes athletics, band and choir. 

Are virtual learning students allowed to participate in before and after-school Fine Arts activities?

Yes, but they would need to provide their own transportation. 

Are virtual learning students allowed to come to their on-campus Fine Arts class for just small group rehearsal, practice or meetings? 

Yes, but they would need to provide their own transportation.

Will virtual learning students attend practice on-campus for athletics? 

Attendance at on-campus practices will be required for athletics. Coaches and campus athletic coordinators will be your best source of information on logistics.  

Special Education

What will Special Education services look like for the 2020 – 20201 school year?

Will students eligible for special education be able to choose between on-campus and virtual learning?

Yes, the option to attend school in person or participate in virtual learning is one that is available to all students, regardless of whether students have a disability and/or are eligible for special education services.

For on-campus learners, how will you help students who struggle with wearing face coverings, especially those with special needs? How will you manage students that need physical touch for reinforcement?

What will virtual learning look like for Special Education students?

If a student who is eligible for special education services opts to participate in Virtual learning, will they have access to the same services as they would on campus?

Yes, we are committed to providing a full continuum of services via distance learning.  The implementation of those services will look different than it does when the services are provided in a brick-and-mortar setting.

What is being done with evaluations that were delayed due to school closure during the spring 2020 semester?

Initial evaluations that were delayed due to school closure in the spring have now resumed.  If your student is one of those awaiting testing, you will be contacted by someone from the Special Education department for an evaluation appointment in the near future.

How will decisions be made regarding compensatory education which may be needed to bridge gaps caused by COVID-19 school closure?

ARD committees will utilize TEA guidelines to consider the need for compensatory services to address any knowledge or skill gaps resulting from school closure.

What if I suspect my child has a disability?

Round Rock ISD is responsible for identifying students with disabilities who have a need for special education services.  If you are concerned your child has a disability, please contact your student’s campus administrator or counselor to discuss a full individual evaluation.  You may also get information from our District Child Find website.

Food Services

Will meal service be available while the District is 100% virtual learning? 

Yes, meal service will be provided as outlined on the Food Services website until Sept. 14. 

Will meals for virtual learning students be provided once schools open for on-campus learning? 

Curbside Meal Service for virtual learning students will begin on Sept. 15. 

Meal distribution will take place from Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. at all curbside locations. During meal distribution breakfast and lunch will be provided. To pick up the meals, families should have the student name and ID written on paper and placed on the car’s dashboard.

If virtual learning for all students was to continue beyond the first three weeks, would meal service still be available? Would we need out another meal request form? 

Yes, curbside meal service would continue as currently outlined. Families will not be asked to fill out another meal order form. 

Can we still pick up meals if we didn’t fill out a meal order form?

Parents who do not fill out the form for their student may still pick up meals and should be prepared to show the student’s ID or a document/report card with the student’s ID printed. Birth certificates will no longer be accepted. Parents should also have the student name and ID written on paper and placed on the car’s dashboard. 

Will a student’s ID be required to pick up meals during this time? 

Yes, a student’s ID number will need to be presented as meals will have to be claimed based on the student’s eligibility status.

Will families have to pay for meals during this time? 

Yes, reduced and Paid students will have to pay the designated meal prices.

How much are meals? 

Free Students will receive meals at no cost. Reduced Students will receive Breakfast at $0.30 and Lunch at $0.40. Paid Students will receive meals at the following rates:

Breakfast – $1.50 for all levels
Elementary Lunch – $2.80
Middle and High School Lunch – $3.05

How can meals be paid for?

Parents and guardians can add funds to the student’s lunch account using the online deposit system My School Bucks (MSB) or through the MSB app. Cash and check payments will be accepted curbside as well. No change will be available for cash payments. 

Does my student need to be present to receive a meal ? 

As a result of a waiver approved by the U.S Department of Agriculture, children are no longer required to be present to receive a meal. However, as stated by the Texas Department of Agriculture, parents or guardians must provide proof for each child that qualifies for the meal service during each visit as districts are required to verify the number. Acceptable methods of proof include an official letter or email from the school confirming the child’s enrollment, individual student report cards, attendance records from the parent portal of the school’s website, or student ID cards.

When on-campus learning resumes, what will meal service look like at schools?

Students will pick up a packaged breakfast in the cafeteria and eat in their classrooms. At Breakfast in the Classroom campuses, checkout procedures will be adjusted to avoid the exchange of ID cards.

Lunch service location will be dependent on each campus space and student numbers. Safety and health precautions will be put in place to maintain social distancing and reduce health risks. Floor decals will be placed to indicate where students will stand while picking up their lunch. 

Students are encouraged to bring their student ID to increase efficiency and reduce contact.

Will Food Services staff be checked for symptoms every day? 

Food Services staff will have their temperature verified and be required to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms each day.

What additional safety measures will be taken? 

Staff will wear face coverings and gloves during food preparation and service and  Plexiglas shields will be installed at each cash register. 

Transportation

Will Round Rock ISD offer transportation? 

At this time Round Rock ISD encourages families to transport their children to and from school. However, we understand that’s not possible for all families and bus transportation will be provided. Parents will be asked in the Parent Choice Survey if their student will be in need of transportation. 

What safety measures will be taken? 

The Transportation Department is in the process of finalizing safety protocols for bus routes and staff. Currently established safety measures include: 

  • Hand sanitizer will be available when entering and exiting the bus.
  • Bus drivers and assistants will wear face coverings.
  • All students will wear face coverings while riding the bus. 
  • Transportation staff is being trained in proper cleaning/disinfecting procedures. 
  • Buses will be disinfected between morning and afternoon routes and at the end of each day.
  • All Round Rock ISD vehicles will be equipped with cleaning and disinfecting supplies. 

Further information on safety measures and social distancing protocols during bus routes will be shared with families once solidified. 

Will students have their temperature checked or be checked for COVID-19 symptoms before entering the bus? 

Parents and guardians will be expected to screen their student(s) for COVID-19 symptoms each day and to keep them home if they display symptoms or a fever of 100 degrees and greater. 

Will staff have their temperature checked or be checked for COVID-19 symptoms before entering their routes? 

Yes, transportation staff will have their temperature checked before every shift and will undergo a daily health screening.

Counseling and Behavioral Services

How can students and parents communicate with counselors? 

Counselors will be available for students to communicate via email. Students are encouraged to email their counselor if they have questions or concerns. Counselors may also reach out to students and parents with helpful information. Counselors will share additional resources and information with students based on their individual needs and work with them to address their respective situations. 

Counselors are available for phone calls with parents who would like to speak with a counselor to share student concerns or information. If a parent is interested in scheduling a phone call, they can email their child’s counselor to set up a time. Additional information is available on each campus website and the Counseling Services Department website.

If a student is experiencing a crisis and is in immediate danger, please call 9-1-1. If the student is not in immediate danger, parents should contact their school counselor for resources and additional support.  

Will Virtual Learning students be able to access counseling resources? 

Yes, students will be able to work with school counselors. As with in-person services, school counselors will offer similar large groups, small groups, and individual sessions to students in a virtual environment. Occasionally, the school counselor might have a brief check-in with a student. Since the virtual environment is different from the campus environment, certain precautions will be required. Parents and students can obtain more counseling resources on the Counseling Services Department website.

Will Virtual Learning students be able to participate in mental and behavioral health services, such as therapy? 

Mental and Behavioral Health support will continue in-person and in virtual environments. For students needing extra support, the school counselor can refer any student for services provided by Bluebonnet Trails through our district’s Mental Health Center partnership. These services will only be provided once consent is given by the parent/guardian. If a student is receiving education through a virtual environment, mental health services will be provided by teletherapy.r. 

If my student was receiving therapy on campus or telehealth from Bluebonnet Trails Community Services (BTCS) last year, can my student continue receiving this service? 

Round Rock ISD partners with Bluebonnet Trails Community Services (BTCS) to provide therapy on campus during the school year. As a result of school closures, BTCS has moved services to a telehealth platform. Any student who was previously seeing a therapist from BTCS on their campus has the option to continue to see their therapist via telehealth services. For more information, parents may contact their school counselor.

Is Bluebonnet Trails Community Services accepting new students for therapy? 

Bluebonnet Trails Community Services (BTCS) is continuing to accept student referrals for therapy from school counselors. If a parent believes that their student may benefit from this service, they may contact their school counselor to discuss their concerns and desire for a referral. Counselors will then work with parents to determine the best options for student support. 

What other resources can students and parents access? 
In addition to the services offered by Bluebonnet Trails, a list of behavioral health resources can be found on the Behavioral Health Resource Guide. The guide contains lists of websites, hospitals, crisis support, and tips on finding assistance in the community.

Advanced Academic Services

If I opt for my child who is enrolled in TAG classes to participate in virtual learning, will they receive and have access to the same level of TAG instruction?

Students identified for gifted services will receive those services regardless of the chosen modality.

How will the District support TAG students? How can TAG students be supported across multiple classrooms by one TAG teacher both virtually and on-campus simultaneously during different blocks?

Round Rock ISD will continue to provide gifted services for all identified students. As with many other programs, service delivery may vary slightly from campus to campus, depending on various factors. Elementary TAG Specialists will be working virtually on-campus. Thus all student support will be online to limit movement in the building. As in other years, students’ curriculum will follow the TAG Aligned Round Rock Curriculum (ARRC). Learning experiences will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous, depending on each school’s unique master schedule. Elementary students will continue the talent development service through homeroom teacher and the support of the TAG Specialist, which may be synchronous or asynchronous in delivery. Secondary gifted services are subject/course-based and will continue as in previous years regardless of course delivery method. If you have any questions about your student’s services, please contact their school’s administration team.

Will Advanced Placement (AP) courses be offered?

Advanced Placement (AP) courses will be offered like previous years. Students will have access to the online AP classroom as well as the District learning management system for both in-person and virtual learning.

Will International Baccalaureate courses and programming be offered? 

International Baccalaureate courses and programming will be offered as in previous years at all levels, and both in-person and virtual instruction will be available.

Will dual credit courses be offered? 

Austin Community College (ACC) dual credit courses will be offered as in other years, but will all be online for the fall 2020 semester. It is anticipated they will be in asynchronous format, but professors are being asked to record synchronous sessions to allow on-demand viewing as needed.

Will OnRamps dual enrollment courses be offered? 

UT OnRamps courses will continue to be offered. Due to their nature, these courses can easily transition from live to virtual and be taught in both spaces at the same time.

Will college readiness assessments be administered this year?

The current plan is to administer the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT in October as in the past, and the SAT School Day in March. Any changes will be a result of state and local guidance in consideration of dynamics at the time, or as a result of developments within the College Board testing protocols.

Do students need to take college readiness assessments with colleges and universities moving to test-optional?

While some institutions of higher education have been considering or implementing test-optional practices for some time, many of those that made the change this year have indicated that it is only for the class of 2021 and they will return to prior practices when the exceptions are no longer warranted by the circumstances. College readiness scores continue to be used in determining scholarships (including National Merit), admissions to specific programs (including Honors), and other opportunities.
