Summer 2024 Work Schedule

We will once again implement a four-day summer work schedule for employees on duty during the summer months.

The four-day schedule will begin the week of June 3 and continue through July 26, with official business hours of Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The district will be closed on Fridays during those weeks.

Work schedules during this period are based on the employee’s position’s assigned service calendar. Employees will work Monday through Thursday, with each day accounting for 10 hours of work rather than the usual eight. Working 10 hours for four days will allow employees to meet the 40-hour threshold for the respective week.

Examples of 10-hour work schedules may include the following:

  • 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a 1-hour lunch break
  • 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break
  • 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break

Any variations from these work schedules should be discussed with and approved by the employee’s supervisor. Supervisors should ensure that business operations remain supported when approving any scheduling variation requests.

Please note that there are some exceptions to the four-day, 10-hour-per-day work week. During certain weeks, employees should work the typical scheduled hours on the duty days identified on their service calendars.

The District will be closed on July 4 in observance of the July 4 holiday. During that week, all employees scheduled to work should work their regular eight-hour day on scheduled days.

During the summer months, non-exempt employees would continue to receive overtime pay only for physical hours worked over 40 per week.

Employees absent for personal or sick leave during a four-day work week should report 10 hours for each day’s absence rather than the typical eight hours.

Employees working summer school should follow the Summer Learning schedule.

Supervisors should review employee work calendars with their staff to ensure employees understand their summer work schedule.

The district is closed from June 26 to July 5. Closing for this period helps reduce energy costs and provide more efficient operations, rather than having a “skeleton” crew of employees due to vacations typically taken during these weeks. Some employees may be scheduled to work during the weeks of June 26 – July 5.

While in many years, the district closure has been two whole weeks, this is not always the case; the period that the district is closed depends on several factors, including the number of district holidays during the previous school year and when the district returned after the summer closure the prior year. For example, a later return date after the previous year’s summer closure, combined with longer holiday breaks, will impact the date of the last day before the summer closure for the current year.

Please note: Employees assigned to the 260-day calendar are scheduled to work during the period of closure and should work with their department supervisors for any alterations to their work schedule for this time period.

Business casual dress will be allowed beginning June 3 through July 26. Clothing should be comfortable but suitable for the workplace (no short shorts, tank tops, etc.). Maintenance personnel should comply with the dress requirements in the Maintenance Handbook (no shorts allowed).

Please contact payroll for any questions regarding the summer work schedule. We hope you enjoy the long weekends and summer break with family and friends and the casual dress practices this summer.
