Eight safety tips for using Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a part of our daily lives. It’s actually been around for much longer than we think. AI is everywhere, from virtual assistants on our phones to smart home devices and algorithms personalizing your social media feeds. While AI can make our lives easier and more efficient, it’s important to understand how to use it safely. Here are some tips for teens and parents on safely using AI.

  1. Understand the technology
Before using any AI-powered device or service, it’s important to understand how it works. AI is a complex technology that uses algorithms and data to make predictions and decisions. Knowing how these algorithms work and what data is being used can help you understand how the device or service makes decisions. If you’ve ever heard of gaining Instagram or YouTube followers by “Figuring out the algorithm,” this is what people are referring to.
  2. Be mindful of privacy
AI relies on data to function, and that data often comes from users. When using an AI-powered device or service, be mindful of the data collected and its use. Read the privacy policy carefully and make sure you’re comfortable with the information being collected. Depending on your age, some systems do not allow anyone under the age of 13 to use them!
  3. Don’t share personal information
Never share personal information, such as your full name, address, or phone number, with an AI-powered device or service unless you trust it completely. Some AI-powered devices and services may ask for personal information to personalize the experience, but be cautious about what you share.
  4. Use strong passwords
Just like with any other online account, using strong passwords to protect your data is important. Don’t use the same password across multiple accounts, and avoid using easy-to-guess passwords, such as “password” or “123456”. And adding a “1!” to the end is very common for hackers to figure out.
  5. Be aware of bias
AI algorithms can be biased, just like humans. Bias in AI can lead to unfair or inaccurate decisions. Be aware of the possibility of bias when using AI-powered devices and services, and report any unfair or inaccurate decisions.
  6. Don’t rely on AI alone
While AI can be helpful, it’s important not to rely on it alone. Always double-check the information an AI-powered device or service provides, and don’t make important decisions based solely on AI predictions.
  7. Keep software up-to-date
Make sure to keep the software on your AI-powered devices and services up-to-date. Updates often include security patches and bug fixes that can protect your data and improve performance.
  8. Monitor usage
Parents should monitor their children’s usage of AI-powered devices and services to ensure they are using them safely—set guidelines for usage, such as limiting screen time and only allowing certain apps and services.

In conclusion, AI is a powerful technology that can make our lives easier and more efficient. However, it’s important to use it safely and responsibly. By understanding how AI works, being mindful of privacy, using strong passwords, being aware of bias, not relying on AI alone, keeping software up-to-date, and monitoring usage, both teens and parents can safely use AI-powered devices and services. In a future post, I’ll go over the ethics of using it, especially in your studies.
