Dear Round Rock ISD Community,

As our calendars shift into August every year, I get more excited about the first day of school. The challenges caused by a global pandemic become the very opportunities to reimagine and redesign public education. Make no mistake, these past few months have provided more opportunities than I’ve ever bargained for in my 37 years in public education. I am incredibly proud of the dedicated team of professionals at Round Rock ISD. Since March, they have been working tirelessly to ensure we are prepared in any eventuality to provide an engaging, rigorous academic experience for our students and protect the health, safety, and welfare of our more than 51,000 students, 7,000 employees, and our entire community.

As I have shared previously, we are planning to begin our school year on schedule, with the first day of instruction on August 20. Our first three weeks of instruction will be entirely virtual, with students accessing classes and assignments from home. Currently, we are planning to welcome students back to campus on September 10 with strict health and safety guidelines in place. We will also continue to offer virtual instruction for families who choose it as their learning preference. We anticipate approximately 70 percent of students will continue to learn from home with 30 percent returning to campus beginning September 10. This allows us to design the school day in a way that provides for ample social distancing and reduces the risk for both students and staff.

Texas Education Agency (TEA) rules allow districts to adjust their start dates and remain 100 percent virtual for the first four weeks of instruction, and to add an additional four weeks of virtual-only instruction if approved by the Board of Trustees. Early this morning, the Austin Independent School District’s Board of Trustees voted to postpone its first day of school from August 18 to September 8 and to remain 100 percent virtual for the first four weeks of the school year, with the option to extend another four weeks. In Round Rock ISD, we are committed to remaining flexible and making the best decisions in the interest of health and safety with the most up-to-date information. We are in daily contact with the Williamson County and Cities Health District and Austin Public Health to guide our decision-making process. I intend to schedule a special meeting with the Board of Trustees on August 27 to discuss whether to consider options for extending virtual learning with the most current and relevant data, information, and guidelines available.

It is our greatest hope that conditions related to COVID-19 will improve throughout the fall and we can welcome more students back to campus and begin to transition to a more traditional school day. However, this pandemic has taught us that conditions can change quickly and we must adapt in order to keep our students and staff safe.

We miss our students and, as I’ve said before, the teachers, staff and administrators of Round Rock ISD want nothing more than to welcome all 51,000 students back to school, but we must put the health and safety of our students, staff, families, and our entire community at the forefront. Please continue to stay connected with us through our Round Rock ISD website, smartphone App, and the District’s Facebook and Twitter pages and be on the lookout for essential updates sent directly to your email address and learn more about our plans for this school year on our Reimagining Education webpage.

Thank you for your patience and support through this challenging situation. While we must be physically apart, for now, we are always together in spirit. I am looking forward to the day when we not only get back to normal but get back to better. I am hopeful that our world will be better soon.

Respectfully,

Steve Flores, Ph.D.

Atentamente,
