The fifth annual Round Rock ISD Functional Fitness Games drew hundreds of district physical education students Nov. 18 at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.
Teams of students completed a variety of physical tasks derived from CrossFit techniques like running with weighted belts and lifting weighted bags during the full-day event. For many of the students, this was their first competitive athletic event.
The event began after Round Rock ISD Assistant Athletic Director Susan Nix began implementing a functional fitness class in high school PE departments five years ago. The classes focus less on a student’s ability to play organized sports and rather puts natural abilities into play, like running and getting stronger by lifting weights.
