Round Rock ISD teachers and paraprofessionals are invaluable to the growth and development of our students and community. As they continue to do amazing things each day, we recognize our Teachers of the Year (TOY) and Paraprofessionals of the Year (POY) for their efforts to enhance teaching and learning and keep our students on the path toward a bright future.
Every year, each campus selects a TOY to recognize their contribution in the classroom and throughout the campus learning community. These teachers are up for a chance to be selected as the District’s Elementary TOY, announced in early May. District winners will have the opportunity to go on and compete for the region and state TOY title.
For the showcases, campus principals were asked to share a few words about their winners and what makes them great.
The District and Texas TOY program awards teachers until the next school year. Therefore, they are awarded and named TOY for the next year and not the current year.
Congratulations to Forest Creek Elementary School teacher Cassie Brawner, 2024 Round Rock ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year!

“Chelsea is the definition of resilience and flexibility. Over the past few years she has had to adapt to changes in teaching style (virtual, hybrid, in-person), language, and grade level. Throughout all of this she has maintained a positive attitude and focused on the good. She collaborates with her teammates as well as other colleagues and always puts kids first. Not only has she kept her own love of teaching but she has inspired others by leading by example. Chelsea is a quiet leader that others follow due to her strong sense of questioning to ensure that what she is doing is always right. She works hard to ensure that all of her students have exactly what they need to learn be it visuals, and translations to new to country students, or extra supports via relational capacity for students with selective mutism. Her calming presence exemplifies her sound instruction. Chelsea is a gift not to only to PSE but to RRISD.” – Sara Nelson, Purple Sage Elementary Principal
Karsten Lott, Educational Assistant ECSE/FCC
“Karsten has been a constant face for our youngest learners in ECSE/FCC throughout a pandemic and teacher change. Her knowledge and grace allows her smile to push through the hardest of days. Her students are nonverbal, yet it their lack of words does not stop Karsten from forming deep and meaningful relationships. She is strong, smart and will be an incredible classroom teacher if that is the route she chooses to pursue. Karsten is a gift to PSE.” – Sara Nelson, Purple Sage Elementary Principal

Redbud hit the jackpot with Mrs. Boelter!” – Kimberly Connelly, Redbud Elementary Principal

Robertson Elementary
Meredith Gaines, Music Teacher
“Ms. Gaines is an incredible music teacher and team player! She is culturally inclusive, finding ways to integrate different cultures and ethnicities traditions into her lessons. Ms. Gaines is an active member of our campus cultural committee where she collaborates, plans, and supports family connection projects for our school community. She’s also well loved for being calm, kind, and patient. We are so lucky to have Ms. Gaines at Robertson.” – Kyle Borel, Robertson Elementary Principal
Keshawn Jackson, PE Educational Assistant
“Coach Jackson is such a positive influence on our students! He holds them to high expectations, but maintains a fun and supportive environment. The kids love working with him! Keshawn came into the school year having zero experience in the education field beyond the YMCA. His upbeat attitude is very infectious and make everyone’s day brighter just being around him. He is professional and works extremely hard to fulfill his duties. He came in and was put into work beyond was expected and has shown great resilience towards that. It’s amazing to see the students come to adore Coach Jackson. Robertson is very lucky to have him! Coach Jackson is such a happy and genuine person. He has developed meaningful relationships with all of our students. Coach Jackson has really had a positive impact on our 5th grade boys. I think male representation is essential and impactful for our youth, and Coach Jackson is always cheerful and full of positivity. Mr. Jackson has an awesome relationship with the students. He relates to them and keeps them motivated. I have seen him helping wherever he’s needed, from Art to FCC to my own classroom.” – Kyle Borel, Robertson Elementary Principal
Sommer Elementary
Jessica Macre, School Counselor
“Year after year Ms. Macre is always going above and beyond to support our students in their social-emotional development. She is always willing to support and do whatever is asked regardless of the situation or available resources, and she is highly respected by both the staff and community as a positive fixture at Sommer Elementary. She would be an excellent example of what a Teacher of the Year candidate should look like. She puts the spotlight on learning by investing in the social-emotional development of ALL students and providing students with the skills and opportunities to be successful here at Sommer through coordinated programs such as Stuco and PALS.” – Brooke Elarms, Sommer Elementary Principal
Sobia Kidwai, Special Education Educational Assistant
“Sobia is SO good at what she does. Watching her work with one particular student is like watching a miracle happen. She is quick to jump in and help in any situation without any prompting. The kids respond to her so well and her positive demeanor and helpfulness is superb! She ensures the learning environment is ready and that the students have their scripts! Sobia is the hardest working Paraprofessional I have worked with in 10 years as a teacher. She is not only a genuinely lovely human to work with, she is unmatched at her job of supporting every student she interacts with, not only those assigned to her caseload. Sobia modifies lessons and assignments to meet the needs of her students on the spot and is always there to offer feedback to any student in need. She also knows the names of every student she comes in contact with and can give you an educational history on most students. She is truly invested in the Patsy Sommer community and selfishly, getting to work alongside her every day is a huge reason I’ve loved being on this campus.” – Brooke Elarms, Sommer Elementary Principal
Spicewood Elementary
Carl Alman, 5th Grade Teacher
“Carl Alman is a leader at Spicewood. I do not just mean of his team, but of the entire campus. Spicewood has been through some very difficult hurdles and Carl has been a rock, mentor, and advisor to myself as a new Principal as well as to the entire staff. Mr. Alman continuously puts students first. His team lost a member due to some difficult circumstances in October, and he was the first to propose solutions that were in no way easier for the teachers, but put students best interests first. Mr. Alman currently has 30 students and some of them have many high needs. He works diligently to advocate for support, maintain relationships with parents, and create an overall positive school environment for all of his students. I am proud to work with Carl Alman everyday at Spicewood and am not surprised at all that his colleagues selected him as our Teacher of the Year.” – Melanie Solis, Spicewood Elementary Principal
Marshall Suniga, Intervention Assistant
“If I had to use one word to describe Marshall Suniga it would be flexible. As an intervention assistant, he is asked to do many things every day. Mr. Suniga consistently has a positive attitude and is always willing to help when needed. He goes above and beyond to form relationships with students and has created many bonds across the campus. Mr. Suniga shows true compassion and a heart for students that cannot be taught. Students love Mr. Suniga and go out of their way to greet him in the hallways, talk to him in the cafeteria, and seek him out if they need someone to talk to. Our staff overwhelmingly pushed his name forward to be recognized and for good reason. We are so proud to have Marshall Suniga as our Spicewood Paraprofessional of the Year.” – Melanie Solis, Spicewood Elementary Principal

She is helpful and patient with our students and does it all with a smile. She is also a crossing guard and does a great job welcoming our students and keeping them safe. She also helps in our office to utilize the extra time she has on the clock from her crossing guard time. Wells Branch Elementary Arts Integration Academy
Alyssa Aguilera, Dual Language Pre-K Teacher
“Alyssa Aguilera is one of the most dedicated, reflective, and enthusiastic teachers that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Although this is Ms. Aguilera’s first year teaching at Wells Branch, she has been working in the District for four years. She transferred to Wells Branch this year specifically because she wanted to follow her dreams and become a bilingual certified teacher. Not only has she forged relationships with the students and families in her classroom community, but she extends herself beyond the walls of her classroom to our Wells Branch community at large. She is leading our inaugural Ballet Folklorico enrichment program, which serves students from first grade through fifth grades after school. Ms. Aguilera started the school year with 32 students in her bilingual Pre-K classroom, and she made each student feel safe, special, and loved. She serves as our Pre-K team lead, and she is instrumental in bringing her team together and forging collaborative relationships with her colleagues. She is the kind of teacher that every principal wants to hire a million times over, and that parents request for their students. We are so lucky to have Ms. Aguilera at Wells Branch!” – Eliza Gordon, Wells Branch Elementary Arts Integration Academy Principal
Sara Nuñez, Bilingual Special Education Paraprofessional
“Sara Nuñez is one of the most kind, reliable, and encouraging educators in our Wells Branch community. She has a huge heart for kids and always finds ways to build connections with our students. She has a passion for serving our bilingual students and works hard to help each of them grow.” – Eliza Gordon, Wells Branch Elementary Arts Integration Academy Principal
