Secondary Teacher of the Year
2024

Round Rock ISD teachers and paraprofessionals are invaluable to the growth and development of our students and community. As they continue to do amazing things each day, we recognize our Teachers of the Year (TOY) and Paraprofessionals of the Year (POY) for their efforts to enhance teaching and learning and keep our students on the path toward a bright future.

Every year, each campus selects a TOY to recognize their contribution in the classroom and throughout the campus learning community. These teachers are up for a chance to be selected as the District’s Secondary TOY, announced in early May. District winners will have the opportunity to go on and compete for the region and state TOY title.

For the showcases, campus principals were asked to share a few words about their winners and what makes them great.

The District and Texas TOY program awards teachers until the next school year. Therefore, they are awarded and named TOY for the next year and not the current year.

Julian Jones - Secondary Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Early College High School teacher Julian Jones, 2024 Round Rock ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year!

CD Fulkes Middle School

Sheng Thao

Sheng Thao, Band Director & Yearbook

“Sheng Thao brings positivity, energy, and passion to everything that she touches. Students are magnetized to her classes. She selflessly sacrifices her own time to help students in other teacher’s programs. For example, she teaches a student after school every Friday so she can be in choir and orchestra. She comes early in the morning to teach an 8th grader who is currently not enrolled in band. When Sheng saw the orchestra program in trouble, she rose to the occasion by searching for resources, contacting other colleagues, teaching the class, and even mentoring the guest educator. In her own words, ‘Even if the bar is set low, that doesn’t mean that we only rise above that. We can completely raise the bar itself.’ She assists in department meetings by recording all the information while simultaneously contributing ideas and solutions. In addition, she steps up in the ground works VLC by creating PBIS slides to educate the entire school. She is a team player in every sense of the word whose main thought at all times is ‘what is best for the child.’ Every life that she positively affects and every child whose life trajectory will forever be altered owes her gratitude.” – Kathy Cawthron, CD Fulkes Middle School Principal

This is just one of the many roles Mrs. Simmons is responsible for…just to name a few, she also coordinates bus transportation for every student who enrolls on our campus, ensures that all substance abuse documents are completed and distributed, finalize enrollment documentations, ensures point system is updated, and is the coordinator for tracking and collecting all funds for the PIE Foundation. Mrs. Simmons truly loves what she does and our campus runs smoothly each day because of her hard work, dedication, and commitment to providing excellent service.” – Donald Bosier, Round Rock Opportunity Center Principal
