Round Rock ISD teachers and paraprofessionals are invaluable to the growth and development of our students and community. As they continue to do amazing things each day, we recognize our Teachers of the Year (TOY) and Paraprofessionals of the Year (POY) for their efforts to enhance teaching and learning and keep our students on the path toward a bright future.

Every year, each campus selects a TOY to recognize their contribution in the classroom and throughout the campus learning community. These teachers are up for a chance to be selected as the District’s Secondary TOY, announced in early May. District winners will have the opportunity to go on and compete for the region and state TOY title.

For the showcases, campus principals were asked to share a few words about their winners and what makes them great.

The District and Texas TOY program awards teachers until the next school year. Therefore, they are awarded and named TOY for the next year and not the current year.

Brittany McGhee-Blair, Dance and Athletics Teacher

“Brittany McGhee-Blair has a positive, selfless spirit about her that is truly admirable. She does so much for our campus and for our community. She not only teaches our dance classes, but she also coaches girls’ athletics. She does both with a smile, a kind heart, and with 100% dedication. Ms. Blair built our dance program from the ground up. She exhibits an unwavering strength on the campus in every role she fulfills. She leads the campus in spirit and tradition and is invaluable to both the athletic and fine arts departments. She tirelessly serves behind the scenes to organize and present cultural and enriching programs for our community. Ms. Blair organizes multiple events to highlight our students including pep rallies and other assemblies. “Ms. Vinci is the most kind and caring staff members at Pearson Ranch. She is often the first stakeholder our new families meet and she always presents the campus and district in a positive light. She is very proud of Pearson Ranch and is a founding staff member, having been both an Administrative Assistant, and now for the past three years as our Registrar. She is very thorough with our PEIMS coding and is conscientious of deadlines for her reports. She is always gentle but firm with reminders to staff regarding submitting their grades and progress reports promptly and she gives staff several reminders that grades are due soon so they can be sure to give students plenty of opportunities for our students to submit missing/late work. Our favorite thing about Alyssa though is her sense of humor. She always leaves the staff in stitches with her quick comebacks (never sarcastic) in her New York accent. “Relda Comer serves the Cedar Ridge community in many ways. She is a dedicated Applied English II and IV teacher. During her lessons she demonstrates a strong knowledge of her students’ social-emotional and academic needs. Her classroom is a community of learners which she has cultivated from day one. Students are encouraged to take risks and be vulnerable with learning expectations. Even when students are not successful Ms. Comer does not allow them to quit. Ms. Comer also serves Cedar Ridge students as a member of the CTE department teaching Career Prep. This is a new endeavor for her this year which she has embraced wholeheartedly. She is an advocate for students in this class and has made quite an impact on students. Being part of both the Special Ed and CTE departments is a challenge but Ms. Comer balances this in a way where neither department is left lacking. “The environmental sciences are ever-evolving and Mrs. Mihealsick works hard to ensure her instruction remains fresh, relevant, and practical. Students study real-world environmental issues and connect their learning to past and current events. She has developed and facilitated multiple cross-disciplinary projects with the AP World History classes and most recently with IB Calculus classes. A visit to her classroom will show students leading the learning and making discoveries with Mrs. Mihealsick as their guide. She utilizes proficiency scales to provide students with clear expectations and a roadmap for their learning. Students understand where she is taking them and take ownership for their journey in her classroom. Most recently she expanded her learning at the San Diego Zoo Teacher Workshop in Conservation Science and launched two new learning experiences in her classroom: a home water audit and radio collar rhino tracking.
