Health Guidelines for School Attendance

Students should not attend school in the following circumstances:

A sick child who is unable to participate at school in a meaningful way should be kept home to rest and recover until symptoms resolve. Keeping a sick child home also protects other children, school staff, and visiting community members from contracting an illness that can be spread from person to person. Please be aware of the following guidelines for school attendance.

  • COVID-19: Refer to the Round Rock ISD COVID-19 Resources for students who are experiencing symptoms, have tested positive, or have been in close contact with an individual who tested positive.
  • Fever: A child must remain home with fever equal to or > 100.0° F and may only return to school after they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin.
  • Diarrhea: A child with diarrheal illness must stay home until they are diarrhea-free without the use of diarrheal-suppressing medication for 24 hours.
  • Head lice (pediculosis): If the school nurse determines or otherwise becomes aware that a student has lice, a letter will be sent home to the student’s parent and to the entire classroom alerting other parents to check their children for lice. If nits are found, a letter will go home only to the parent of the student.
Head lice do not jump or fly and are most commonly contracted by head-to-head contact. Head lice are commonly found in school-aged children, so parents/guardians should routinely monitor their students for live lice at home.  Round Rock ISD Lice Protocol. More information on head lice can be obtained from the DSHS website Managing Head Lice in School Settings and at Home.

If you take your child to a healthcare provider for an evaluation of illness or injury, please be sure to request a written letter stating when your child may return to school and any accommodations required upon his/her return.

Round Rock ISD does not provide crutches or wheelchairs for use at school. Students are required to submit a note to the school/campus nurse from a health care provider to be allowed to bring and temporarily use crutches/wheelchair in the school setting. The health care provided note should include the anticipated length of time the student will be needing the use of crutches/wheelchair
along with the length of time the student needs to be excused from PE and/or recess. Students with lifelong medical conditions are exempt from needing a note from a health care provider for the use of crutches/wheelchairs while at school.

A healthy school community requires parents and schools to partner with each other. To prevent/minimize local outbreaks of contagious disease, parents must keep children who have an illness that can be spread from person to person at home, and Round Rock ISD nurses will exclude students with symptoms of a communicable illness from school attendance.
